Buying Ready-to-Wear Suits Online: Size and Fit Checklist

A familiar size label is a starting point, not a guarantee of fit. Different brands and cuts can use different measurements, even when both garments are marked medium. When buying a ready-to-wear suit online, compare the measurements for that specific style before choosing a size.

1. Confirm whether the outfit is stitched

Read the title and description for words such as ready to wear, stitched, semi-stitched or unstitched. An unstitched fabric set needs tailoring. A semi-stitched outfit may still need finishing or fitting. If the listing does not clearly explain what arrives, ask before purchasing.

“Free size” also needs clarification. Look for actual garment measurements, an adjustable range and any stated alteration allowance. Do not interpret it as a promise that one garment fits everyone.

2. Identify the measurements you are comparing

Check whether the size chart lists body measurements or garment measurements. Body measurements describe the person; garment measurements describe the finished clothing. Garment measurements need enough ease for the intended fit and movement, so do not substitute one for the other.

For a helpful comparison, lay a well-fitting outfit flat and measure it using the same method shown in the product chart. If a chart gives a full circumference, do not compare it directly with a flat half-width measurement. Keep all your measurements in the same unit, either inches or centimetres.

3. Check more than the bust measurement

Compare shoulders, bust, waist or hip area where relevant, sleeves and the total shirt length. For trousers, check the waist, hip, rise and length where the listing provides them. A style that fits at the bust can still feel tight at the upper arms or sit incorrectly at the shoulders.

Silhouette matters too. A straight kurti and a flared Anarkali will not sit the same way. Look at the product photographs alongside the measurements, and think about whether you prefer a close or relaxed fit.

4. Read the included-pieces list

Check whether a listing includes the shirt alone or a coordinated set. A two-piece suit and a three-piece suit can include different combinations, so use the description rather than the number alone. Confirm whether an inner, lining or dupatta is supplied.

Accessories, shoes and jewellery shown on the model may be styling items. If they are important to your purchase, make sure they appear in the included-pieces information.

5. Ask about alterations before ordering

Do not assume a suit has spare seam allowance or that custom fitting is included. Some designs may offer adjustments, while others may not. Ask with the exact product link and your measurements. If an alteration service is offered, confirm the cost, preparation time and how it affects return eligibility.

6. Check delivery and return terms

Allow time for preparation, shipping, trying on the outfit and any local alterations. Review the shipping policy and refund policy before purchase, particularly for a fixed event date or a customised order.

When your outfit arrives, check the fit and included pieces before removing tags or making alterations. Follow the policy's eligibility conditions and request period if you need help.
